Look After Your Heart

By Wayne Visser

I hear your warning:
Look after your heart, you’ve been hurt before
When strangers approach, don’t open the door
Take care who you trust, don’t risk love too soon
Don’t sway with the tide, don’t swing with the moon
Yet I am thinking:
A bird in a cage is safe but not free
A plant in a pot won’t grow to a tree
A wood is not light unless there’s a path
A home is not warm unless there’s a hearth
So I have resolved:
To open my heart, not hide anymore
To welcome new friends, like waves to the shore
To give trust a chance, give into love’s swoon
Let hope hum its song, and dance to the tune
