A Love That Could Last

How quickly belief turns to doubt

When we’ve been disappointed before

And how quickly we hold our shield out

When the wounds are still painfully raw

If only our faith was more strong

For no matter the challenge we’ll cope

And despite everything that is wrong

Our unfailing redeemer is hope

How quickly delight turns to fear

When we’ve been disillusioned and caught

And how quickly we tune in our ear

To the cries of past battles we’ve fought

If only we slowed down and gazed

At the sun and the moon up above

We’d be grateful and truly amazed

By the people and things that we love

How quickly the best turns to worst

When the goal is so nearly in reach

And how quickly we think that we’re cursed

When the road leads us into the breach

If only we focused on now

Not the wheel of the eidolic past

And believed in what trust can allow

To emerge – like a love that could last
